At R2P the advocacy activities are the core of our work. Yet, advocacy alone is inefficient if it is accessible only to some people and groups. So we decided to teach other active citizens how to properly organize the advocacy campaigns.

Recently in Dnipro, our colleagues Elina Shyshkina and Anastasia Odintsova shared their experiences and knowledge about the stages and components of the advocacy activities.

Правозахисниці Фонду провели тренінг з адвокації для активістів та представників громад

Representatives of the civil society organizations, Amalgamated Territorial Communities (ATCs) and from the local self-government bodies took part in the training. The choice of such stakeholders was not accidental, because they work directly with the internally displaced population and help them solve their problems.

Most of the participants themselves are internally displaced persons, so they are well aware of all the problems. According to the participants, the purpose of their participation in the training was to gain knowledge and information to be able to jointly solve the problems of migrants.

Research of Access to Administrative Services in ASCs

«It was important to give the participants an algorithm of actions, as well as show them real-life examples of successful advocacy campaigns, so they will know what should be taken into account when planning advocacy campaigns and activities. The training was organized in a mixed format and included both theoretical and practical perspectives so that participants will be able to better understand the essence and purpose of the advocacy,»

 – said Elina Shyshkina, Advocacy Coordinator of the Right to Defense Charitable Foundation.

The training was held within the program “Legal support to IDPs and local authorities” of the Project “Promotion of Social Infrastructure Development. USIF VI”, implemented by the Charitable Fund “Right to Protection” (R2P) jointly with the Ukrainian Social Investment Fund (USIF).

Today, dialogues have become more and more recognized as a unique tool for peacebuilding initiatives. This thesis once again was proved and supported during the discussion «How Art Brings Peace Closer», which took place on Saturday, September 4, at the Festival of Thoughts in Severodonetsk.

Most people know and understand peace initiatives exclusively through the prism of international relations, as something inherent only to the political elites and statesmen. At the same time, art can also be a powerful tool for bringing peace closer, i.e. that art can be the basis for wholly new ideas and narratives, it can break stereotypes, prejudices, and even boundaries.

During the event, our speakers told about their experiences of participating in the art projects and performances connected to the theme of armed conflicts.

By the way, our speakers:

Den Gumenniy – playwright, performer, and teacher. For 7 years he has been working with IDPs and people living near the ‘contact line’
Max Ieligulashvili – facilitator, trainer of non-formal education in the field of human rights, non-discrimination, and socio-political conflicts.
Steven Hristo Evestus is a former Chief State Prosecutor of the Estonian Prosecutor General Office. He is currently a member of the board of Transparency International in Estonia, a theater critic, and co-author of socially critical plays.
Iryna Eihelson – Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Conflict Psychologist, Dialogue Facilitator. Iryna moderated the event

Фестиваль думок 2021: роль мистецтва у наближенні миру Festival of Thoughts 2021: Peace-Building Role of an Art

«The speakers who we had invited are not only artists but also the conflict researchers and professional facilitators who use peace dialogues as a tool in their job. Experts noted that we should not romanticize art as it is just a tool, not a problem solution: the result depends on who uses it and how it is used. It may help to resolve conflicts, or, conversely, become a firestarter. What especially caught our attention was that people who just passed through were interested in the event we organized: they were touched by the topic of peacekeeping. People asked questions and were involved in a discussion – and that means that we should continue to discuss the topic,»

– told Natalia Proskurenko, Manager of the Project «Peacebuilding and Reconciliation in Ukraine.»

As in most regions near the contact line, it is quite difficult to find a job in the Azov Sea region. However, we hope that the participants of our project will soon have a few more opportunities to get a job or start their own business.

In August 2021, CF “Right to Protection” (R2P) held 6 career consultation meetings in the cities of Berdyansk, Mangush, Tokmak, Melitopol, and Mariupol. The events were organized in a mixed format.

73 participants had the opportunity to join the educational trainings.

R2P conducted career consultations for the population of the Azov Sea region БФ «Право на захист» провів кар’єрні консультації для населення Приазовського регіону

During the meetings, the beneficiaries had the opportunity to meet our speakers – the Manager of the Project Maryna Lyakh, Employment Advisors Anastasiya Chrystenko and Valeriia Mykhalko, and the Lawyer of the Project Denys Chekmenyov. Our colleagues, in particular, told the participants about:

  • the essence and purpose of the educational program;
  • the structure of the curriculum, its modules, and expected results;
  • topics of the group and individual career and legal consultations;
  • legal chatbot and its capabilities;
  • work with the Zoom platform (in the context of participation in the online events).

As a result, participants were acquainted with the format of the course, received answers to important organizational questions regarding practical classes and individual work, as well as had the opportunity to agree and clarify the schedule of classes. Among other things, our colleagues created groups in one of the popular messengers for further communication with the beneficiaries during the course.

At the end of the meetings, the date and time of the first webinar on CV creation and job search were agreed upon.

The events were organized by the CF “Right to Protection” (R2P) with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH within the framework of the project “Increasing self-reliance and employability of vulnerable persons in the Azov Sea region of Ukraine”.
