On Friday, September 10, 2021, the Charitable Fund “Right to Protection” (R2P) held a round table within the framework of the project «Peacebuilding and reconciliation project in Ukraine».

The event was joined by representatives of the Luhansk Regional State Administration (RSA), Donetsk RSA, Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Donetsk RSA, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ministry for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, Ministry of Energy, environmental experts and also Members of the Ukrainian Parliament.

The purpose of the round table was to put environmental issues in eastern Ukraine on the agenda, as well as to identify ways to improve the environmental situation in Donbas.

During the event, the speakers discussed issues related to the uncontrolled flooding of mines, as well as the other environmental risks in the Donbas. In addition, participants had the opportunity to discuss the current state of environmental monitoring in the settlements of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Specialists of the R2P presented the project results – the recommendations for the implementation of measures to raise public awareness about and to inform the public about the environmental risks on the examples of the following cities – Toretsk, Dobropillya, Selidove, and Zolote. Recommendations will be sent to the heads of city councils and heads of Civil-military administrations in Donetsk and Luhansk regions for review and further implementation.

«We are sincerely grateful that as many parties as possible were able to join the event to discuss such an important topic of the ecological future of Donbas and Ukraine in general. Everything is interconnected. When one parameter is being changed it causes a change of the other parameters in the ecosystem,»

– said the Manager of Project Oleksandra Lukyanenko.
